“ THE ARTS AND EDUCATION ARE NEEDED MORE THAN EVER TO LEAD THE CHANGE FOR A MORE EQUITABLE SOCIETY ”

Mervyn Weir, Creative Director

The Murder of George Floyd has Changed Everything

The film which has been seen by millions, of a white police officer kneeling on the neck of George Floyd while he is in police custody, handcuffed and pleading for his life, will be forever seared into our collective memory.

“I cannot breathe” became the rallying cry for change. All around the world protests have taken place, statues have been pulled down, policing policies are been challenged and more people are now speaking out about the everyday racism they face.

Krik Krak has also published our own creative response to this seminal moment of modern times. This richly illustrated narrative, takes the reader on a poetic journey through a history of systemic racism that connects the Age of Discovery with the 21st century.

Award-winning film

An award-winning, powerful and thought-provoking film on ‘The Matter of Black Lives’. During the ‘lockdown’ an international and intergenerational group filmed themselves as they spoke the words from Mervyn Weir’s forthcoming, illustrated book: “I Can’t Breathe.”

Using the Arts to Tackle Sensitive Issues

Now more than ever, there is a need for fresh thinking and original approaches to educating our children and training our workforce. New resources are needed that will help create a society where everyone is valued.

It is vital that we educate today’s citizens, especially our children, with an accurate understanding of how colonial and imperialist racist actions have impacted the world we live in today. We cannot build a cohesive community without first breaking down the walls of ignorance that separate us.

The creative arts are a uniquely powerful way to confront and engage with culturally sensitive and emotive themes. Let’s take this opportunity to work together to make a difference.

Decolonise the Curriculum

Whatever activities we undertake, we are ultimately focused on celebrating black cultural heritage and tackling the implicit bias and institutionalised racism found in much of British life, especially the educational system. There is now a widespread call to decolonise the curriculum and we are committed to supporting and working with all those with a similar goal.
